MONEY

  • Your home currency may be exchanged at the airport, your hotel, one of the local money changers, or at one of the many ATMs throughout Egypt.
  • In Egypt the Egyptian currency is called Egyptian pounds. The exchange rates vary depending on what you use in the exchange: cash, check, traveler’s check or credit card. Be sure to check with your hotel for the exchange rate as it can fluctuate daily. At all larger stores and restaurants you may use either your credit card or debit card.
  • Please check Visa or MasterCard on the web before departure for the current rate of exchange.
  • Major credit cards such as Visa or MasterCard or your ATM card are excellent to have in case of an emergency and for buying more expensive items. They provide a good exchange rate and receipt. Always ask for the carbon, if used, along with your customer copy. Important: before you depart overseas, please notify your bank or credit card provider of your schedule, and that you will be making purchases out of the country.
  • We do not recommend the use of traveler’s checks, as you may experience difficulty using and/or cashing them. In addition, banks usually charge a handling fee when cashing traveler’s checks. Major credit cards are recommended for purchases.

VAT TAX

Egypt does not have VAT Tax on purchases.

TIPS (Gratuities) & BARGAINING

In Egypt for your personal meals it is customary to tip in restaurants. When the bill does not include service charge, a 12% tip should be added to the payment. In hotels, tip the bellhop or any other service provider who helps you. Taxi drivers are generally NOT tipped. Passengers are advised to ask cab drivers to turn on the meter, thus avoiding unnecessary haggling.

Egyptians love to bargain! You will find vendors at the temple sites before you enter, and on the streets and in street markets. Advice if you want to purchase something: first ask for their best price and then offer 40% off the price. They will counter-offer. If you really want it, take the offer or walk away. They may come down with a better offer. This is a good time to take it or walk away for good. Enjoy the process but do not engage with vendors who are offensive. Also many of them will say “See you later!”, and if you say “Yes” they will find you! So, smile and keep on walking. Also you may want to shop in a group, with others who are good shoppers. Then once you have settled on the best price, any of you can buy the item at that same price. This saves a lot of time.

LUGGAGE

  • Please arrive with one (1) suitcase per person only and one carry-on!
  • On tour buses in Egypt, luggage storage space is limited. Only one suitcase per person will be stored in the luggage compartment of the bus.
  • Inside the bus, storage space is limited to the under-seat space in front of you and the shallow space above your head.
  • You are responsible for additional pieces at all times.
  • Porters are tipped for all group transfers of luggage. For Private porter’s assistance the tip to the porter helping you is on you.
  • Always pack fewer clothes than you think you need.
  • Include a closable canvas bag inside your suitcase, in case you need extra luggage for items you have purchased. Be aware that many airlines will charge for overweight bags and more than one checked bag and one carry-on.

PACKING, CLOTHING & THINGS TO TAKE

  • For touring wear loose, comfortable cottons or other lightweight clothing that can be layered.
  • For Mt. Sinai excursion: Heavy clothes are necessary (jacket or cotton shirt, heavy sportswear) as it’s 5-10° Celsius during the night. Must also bring a small battery flash light.
  • Dress in Egypt is casual, but be prepared at tour sites to cover your shoulders and arms. Please, no tank-tops. It is appropriate to have at least the upper arms covered (T-shirt length), and pants and skirts to at least the knee. Bare midriffs are not appropriate for this tour. At some sites entrance is denied to people wearing shorts or sleeveless tops. It is always good to pack a scarf to cover your arms or your head when it is hot. Pack a light waterproof jacket for cool evenings on the Nile Cruise.
  • Comfortable walking shoes are a must! Please break them in before you come to Egypt. Include a more formal pair of shoes for dinners at the hotel. High heels are NOT recommended for women. Bring sandals and water shoes for the pools. There will be lots of sand, so on tours open sandals may be hard to walk in.
  • Be sure to include: swimsuit, water shoes, small flashlight, travel packages of tissues, sleeping mask, earplugs, sunglasses, sunscreen, lip balm, moistened towelettes, washcloth, pocket size tissues (for restrooms), hand & body lotion (dry climate), notebook, pens, highlighter, and notebook, extra film and batteries for camera with a protective case for x-ray machines, compact folding umbrella in case of rain.
  • Money (more than you think you will need, in small bills).
  • Do not pack: valuables, including items of sentimental value. Leave them at home.

VOLTAGE

Electricity in Egypt is 220 Volts, alternating at 50 Hertz. If you travel to Egypt with a device that does not accept 220 Volts at 50 Hertz, you will need a voltage converter adaptor (220 Volts). Plug adapters and outlets in Egypt generally accept 1 type of plug: (two round pins). We recommend a universal adapter and converter kit.

VACCINATIONS

None are required for entry into Egypt.

PRESCRIPTION MEDICINES

  • Be sure to pack enough of your prescription medications to last through the tour. Pack your medicine in the original bottle and bring some in your carry-on bag.
  • Bring an extra week’s supply, your doctor’s phone number, and a copy of the generic names for each.
  • Have your doctor write an Egyptian-equivalent prescription for life-dependent medications. Not all prescriptions are interchangeable. Your doctor will be able to advise you.
  • If you are allergic to any medicines, please keep a list of these with your passport.
  • In Egypt you may need a prescription for medicine that is sold over the counter in other countries.
  • You should pack some aspirin, antacids, and similar items you use at home that you feel you might need on the tour.
  • If you suffer from motion sickness, bring along any medication you use to prevent this on the boat, bus and plane.

PREPAID PHONE/SIM CARDSCELL PHONES & SMARTPHONES

  • The system used in Egypt is GSM. You can buy (not rent) a brand new mobile + SIM card for as low as 200 Egyptian Pounds. Or you can bring your own mobile and buy only the SIM for only 20 Egyptian Pounds, valid for 3 months before you have to re-charge! This even includes a few free minutes calls and unlimited incoming calls. If you plan to make many calls out, buy a re-charge card for 25 to 200 Egyptian Pounds, depending on your needs.
  • Mobilnil have booths everywhere, so you can probably get a rental or you can buy a SIM card for use in Egypt when you are there. Everybody in Egypt has cell phones, and Vodaphone and Mobilnil are in Egypt.
  • If you have a cell phone or smartphone, check with your local provider for international service.

COMPUTERS, LAPTOPS, iPADS

  • You can bring your own laptop or iPad, or use the public computer in the lobbies of most hotels in Egypt.
  • To use your own devices, it is best to buy a small adapter plug (220 volts, for Egypt) to put on the end of your electrical cord. This will save your battery life – either in the hotel or elsewhere – and keep you online. Purchase the adapter plug for about $5 USD at a travel store or on-line – it’s easier to buy them beforehand.
  • For some devices to work, you may need a converter with an adapter attached.
  • There is usually a fee of about $10 USD per day for WIFI access in hotel rooms. Some hotels allow you to use your laptop in their lobby or designated areas for wireless connection – either complimentary or for a small fee.

BUSES & RESTROOMS

  • The deluxe touring motor coaches are air-conditioned, and will accommodate approximately 50 passengers each.
  • Be on time and be prepared to rotate seats on the bus.
  • No restrooms on the bus. However, restrooms are available in most sites that we will be visiting, and travel distances between sites are relatively short.

DAY TOUR DEPARTURE & RETURN

Usually, we will depart the hotel after breakfast between 8:00-9:00AM and return in the afternoon. Your tour guide will announce the sightseeing schedule and a wake-up call for each day’s itinerary.

LOST ITEMS

  • Double check your belongings before leaving the plane, hotels and buses. We cannot assume responsibility for lost items.
  • Put your name and a contact number on your belongings. You can include our company information too.
  • Please check your hotel safe for any valuables before your leave the room.

WEATHER IN EGYPT

April is a wonderful time to visit Egypt. The climate is ideal. The desert is not too hot, and the evening temperatures are refreshingly cool. The daytime temperature rises to an average maximum of 30°C (86°F), while the temperature typically falls no lower than 20°C (68°F) overnight. On the Nile Cruise the temperatures can be cooler. Bring a light jacket for cool Nile breezes. In April bring warmer clothes for the nights and cool clothes for the desert days. Don’t forget mosquito repellent. We recommend checking the weather forecast before you leave for Egypt.

TIME IN EGYPT

SECURITY CHECK (UPON DEPARTING EGYPT)

Passengers must arrive at the airport 3 hours before departure time.
Passengers arriving at the airport must first undergo a security check before approaching the counter of the airline they are flying. Passengers and their luggage are inspected by airport personnel with modern security equipment. They will then check in their luggage and receive a boarding pass and seat number.

  • Have all travel documents readily available at check-in, placed in your carry-on or purse, NOT in your luggage.
  • Be prepared to submit yourself to a body check by metal detector or by physical means if necessary.
  • Be prepared to open all luggage for inspection at check-in. All packages, including gifts, may be opened at this time.
  • Do not lock your CARRY-ON bag in any way, because they may check the carry-on in front of the passenger.
  • Do not accept anything presented to you unless you have inspected the contents.
